Building on the backcountry snowcat skiing program, Homewood is offering a series of backcountry workshops for guests. Ranging from courses for those who have never tried backcountry skiing/snowboarding before, to the advanced looking to brush up on techniques. Homewood is the perfect place to take your mountain skills and begin your journey into the backcountry.
As an experienced resort skier/rider, you continue to search for your next adventure in the snow. You cannot help but look to the slopes just outside the resort and dream of the untouched powder and uncrowded terrain.
Designed for experienced resort skiers and riders, the Homewood Introduction to Backcountry Program is for those that want to gain experience, develop their skills, and better understand backcountry terrain.
This workshop is a day of touring in terrain beyond the standard lift-serviced slopes at Homewood Mountain Resort providing the best way to start your journey safely into backcountry touring.
Share the backcountry experience with your family! Introduce your entire family to the terrain outside of the resort and book a Private Workshop for personalized instruction. All ages welcome. A parent/guardian must accompany all youth participants at all times during the workshop.
All participants:
- Must be comfortable in advanced resort terrain
- Should plan for a day of physical activity

- Become proficient at using your equipment
Who should participate:
- Those looking for a skills course to complement the AIARE avalanche safety training courses, ideally preparing for the AIARE Level 1 Course and AIARE Avalance Resue Course.
- Those interested in gaining experience, skills, and understanding to develop your backcountry toolbox while working with a Homewood Guide.

The AIARE Level 1 course is a 3-day intensive seminar that covers avalanche formation, observational techniques for snowpack, the ability to use an avalanche transceiver/probe, safe travel methods in avalanche terrain, how to interpret the avalanche bulletin, companion rescue protocols, and decision-making fundamentals. This class is designed for skiers and riders who are comfortable in advanced to expert in-bounds terrain and looking to explore the backcountry. Participants should have skis with touring bindings and compatible boots or a split board, shovel, beacon and probe, and a backpack to carry all these items plus extra clothing layers, water, and snacks.
This course includes one day in a virtual classroom and two days in the field at Homewood Mountain Resort. This is a prerequisite for AIARE Level 2.

The AIARE Level 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE Level 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss the weather, snowpack, and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. This course is for people who have taken the AIARE Level 1 course, Avalanche Rescue, and have spent at least a year traveling in backcountry terrain.
In addition to the equipment listed for AIARE Level 1, participants will need a snow study kit and snow density kit. A detailed equipment list will be provided when you enroll.
