In collaboration with Truckee-based North American Ski Training Center (NASTC), Homewood will offer an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course January 15, 19 & 20 2022, and February 12, 15 & 16 2022 – plus an AIARE Level 2 Avalanche Course Date TBD. These courses give participants a network of skills necessary to navigate the backcountry. Participants will learn safe travel methods in avalanche terrain, how to interpret the avalanche bulletin, companion rescue protocols, and decision-making fundamentals.
NASTC was one of the first AIARE schools in Tahoe. The AIARE curriculum is a 3-day intensive seminar designed to give you an understanding of avalanche formation, “nature’s billboard” observation skills, the ability to use an avalanche transceiver and probe, and how to dig a snow study pit. This is a minimum amount of know-how if you want to travel, ski, or ride in the backcountry or side-country safely. There is time spent daily in the classroom and in the field.
The AIARE Level 1 course is a 3-day intensive seminar that covers avalanche formation, observational techniques for snowpack, the ability to use an avalanche transceiver/probe, safe travel methods in avalanche terrain, how to interpret the avalanche bulletin, companion rescue protocols, and decision-making fundamentals. This class is designed for skiers and riders who are comfortable in advanced to expert in-bounds terrain and looking to explore the backcountry. Participants should have skis with touring bindings and compatible boots or a split board, shovel, beacon and probe, and a backpack to carry all these items plus extra clothing layers, water, and snacks.
This course includes one day in a virtual classroom and two days in the field at Homewood Mountain Resort. This is a prerequisite for AIARE Level 2.

The AIARE Level 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE Level 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss the weather, snowpack, and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. This course is for people who have taken the AIARE Level 1 course, Avalanche Rescue, and have spent at least a year traveling in backcountry terrain.
In addition to the equipment listed for AIARE Level 1, participants will need a snow study kit and snow density kit. A detailed equipment list will be provided when you enroll.
